FAQs
The Basics
Can I bring an FPoleV as a carry-on when flying?
Mostly, but it really depends on airport security. Tripods and monopods are generally allowed as carry-ons, but some security agents may consider a pole a rigid or "club-like" object, and the final call is theirs. I've flown worldwide with FPoleV and it's typically fine, but exceptions happen, and budget airlines tend to be stricter.
A few tips from experience:
- The Micro fits in most carry-on bags
- The Mini and Merlin are safer to check, especially on international flights. The Merlin fits most overhead bins if it does make it through; a front coat closet can help.
- Going through security with a camera attached helps, it reads as camera gear, not a pole.
- For checked bags, a fishing rod case or snowboard bag protects it well.
Bottom line: carry-on is possible but never guaranteed. If missing your flight would be a problem, checking it is the safest move.
How does the pole disappear from my footage?
That's the magic of 360 cameras. With the camera mounted at the tip, the thin pole sits in the camera's stitching line — the spot where the two lenses' images merge — so it gets erased from the frame automatically. What's left looks like a camera flying through the air.
Is this just a long selfie stick?
No. A selfie stick tops out around 4 feet and is built for holding a phone at arm's length. An FPoleV extends up to 30 feet in a 3K carbon fiber weave — the same material used in bike frames and race parts — built to swing a camera through the air, shoot after shoot, season after season.
Do I need a 360 camera to use it?
The "invisible pole" effect requires a 360 camera, and that's where the FPoleV shines. But the standard 1/4-20 thread also fits regular action cams, gimbals, and lights — it's a useful boom for any of them. You just won't get the vanishing trick without a 360.
Will it work with my camera?
Almost certainly. Every FPoleV has a standard 1/4-20 thread — the universal camera mount. Insta360 X5, GoPro Max 2, DJI Osmo 360, older models, gimbals: if it has a standard mount, it fits.
Choosing Your Pole
Which size should I get?
Micro (2–12') if portability is the priority - travel, vehicles, tight spaces.
Merlin (4–30') if you're a pro chasing maximum reach.
And if you're not sure: the Mini (3–20') is the one most shooters choose. It covers nearly everything.
Can one person really handle the Merlin at 30 feet?
Yes, but it takes strength and technique, and there's a learning curve. The Merlin is built for serious shooters who want the shots nothing else can get. If you're newer to pole work, start with the Mini; the skills transfer.
Will the pole flex or wobble at full extension?
Some movement at full extension is physics — no 20- or 30-foot pole on earth is perfectly rigid. The carbon fiber weave keeps it dramatically stiffer than anything else out there, and smooth footage comes from smooth technique, which you'll pick up fast. (Pro tip: 360 cameras' stabilization erases most of what's left.)
Usage & Maintenance
Does it float?
The removable end section, the one with the camera thread, floats with your camera attached. Unscrew it, throw it in, get the shot, fish it out. The full pole does not float, so don't drop the whole thing in the lake & expect in to float.
Can I take it places drones are banned?
That's the whole point. National parks, festivals, stadiums, cities - anywhere drones are restricted, the FPoleV isn't a drone. (Always follow local rules and event policies; some venues have their own equipment restrictions.)
How do I care for it?
Rinse with fresh water after dirt, sand or saltwater exposure, let it dry fully sectioned out.
